Why go on tour?
Touring lets you gain experiences which are not available at home. By going overseas, you take your group to the very heart of music in a way that books, movies and websites can never hope to match. Music is a fine art which speaks symbolically, therefore powerfully about us. It is inextricably linked to culture, history and place, and intimately connected to religion, philosophy, politics and economics. When you tour for music, you are able to put yourself in the very centre of where it all happened (and is happening now) and generate a deep understanding and authentic knowledge base which cannot be achieved any other way.
What are some of the benefits of touring?
Touring is an amazing way to gain deeper insights and more powerful motivations. It inspires you to explore, experiment and experience things beyond the everyday. This produces an open and searching mind. Not only this, when you tour, everyone grows in personal confidence and becomes more self-reliant, organised and responsible. Students learn to be more independent, expand their horizons and become globally aware. Touring helps young people become more reliable, diligent members of the group, members of society and citizens of our world.

Where can we go?
You can tour just about anywhere in the world where it is safe to do so. Gullivers has extensive experience in the UK and Ireland, across Europe, the USA, Asia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America. Talk to us about what you want your tour to achieve and we can suggest destinations which will offer the very best opportunities for your group.
Do we have to enter a competition on tour?
Some groups on tour compete and others don’t. It really depends on the performance level of your group, the schedule and rules of available competitions, and whether you see competition as the most important thing for you. There are many alternatives available and Gullivers can help you decide which activities best meet your touring needs.
Does performance have to be the focus of our tour?
The needs of your group will determine your tour’s focus. Masterclasses, workshops, going to great performances in famous venues, visiting historic sites, galleries and museums, walking through old cities in the footsteps of the greats, eating national cuisine in local restaurants and trying to speak the language – all these things are valuable aspects of a tour which make the educational experience complete. We can help you strike the right balance as you plan your tour with our specialist consultants. You decide on your tour’s focus and we help you make it a reality.

What kind of repertoire should we prepare for our tour?
Of course the standard and focus of your group will be important factors in choosing repertoire, but you should also consider the venues and audiences you might encounter. For example many churches regularly host concerts, but the priest may make certain specifications, for example that some or all of the program must be sacred music, or only choral music is permitted, possibly only acappella choral music. You should also prepare a varied program including something which will be familiar and appeal to local audiences – Strauss, Mozart or Beethoven in Austria, Dvorak or Smetana in Czech republic, Bartok or Kodaly in Hungary. Festivals almost always have set repertoire and other rules for each competition category, so it is important to check this early in your planning process.
What kind of accommodation can we expect?
The standard of accommodation on your tour is entirely up to you. This is often a key cost variable, so the standard you choose will affect overall pricing. Adults usually prefer twin rooms, while students can have 2, or more to a room, depending on your preference and hotel configurations. Most importantly, the earlier you book and get your deposit in, the more options you will have, especially in peak periods.
What do we do in the case of food intolerance and allergies?
We will ask you for details about these things when you book with us. Airlines usually supply special meals and sometimes withdraw all nuts from a flight if required. While there are many food intolerances in Australia, in many countries, especially in Europe, only regular meals and a tasty vegetarian option are available.
What about transporting musical instruments and equipment?
With careful planning, it is usually possible to make all your instruments fit into your overall luggage allowance. Gullivers experienced staff can help you with this. If you think you need to hire or transport special equipment – large percussion instruments for example – discuss this at the planning stage so it can be costed into your overall tour price. This is important because adding in hire and transportation later can be expensive.
What is not included in a Gullivers Tour?
There are always a few things which you need to be aware of when planning a tour. Things like airline fuel surcharges and departure taxes are not usually included as they constantly vary. These will be calculated and explained about 3 months before you depart. Passports are an individual requirement every traveller needs to organise for themselves. Sometimes a visa is required and Gullivers can advise on the best way to organise these. Gratuities (tipping) are often advisable for tour managers, drivers and local guides if you are happy with their service. Gullivers can suggest amounts and advise you of easy ways to organise this for your group.
Insurance for valuable musical instruments?
Regular travel insurance rarely covers musical instruments of any value. To ensure your musical instruments are fully insured on tour, Gullivers Music Travel recommends Marsh Musical Instrument Insurance in addition to your regular travel insurance. Marsh offers comprehensive coverage worldwide which includes a replacement instrument if required in an emergency.
Marsh can be contacted at www.marshadvantage.com.au or 1300 413 484 for an individual quotation.
Do we need travel insurance?
Travel Insurance is essential and available from Gullivers Music Travel. A Comprehensive Policy with Suresave Travel Insurance activates coverage at time of policy issue. It is highly recommended you purchase your policy as soon as funds are paid towards your trip. This will ensure peace of mind for a number of unforeseen circumstances that can occur both prior to departure and during your trip. Please ask your consultant for a quotation and full details on the policy coverage available.
